Charles Dreyfus

French-born British Zionist activist

Charles Dreyfus was a prominent figure in British Zionist activism, having been born in France. His commitment to the cause was evident in his role as President of the Manchester Zionist Society. In addition to his activism, Dreyfus was involved in local politics, serving as a member of Manchester City Council. He was also a key figure in the East Manchester Conservative Association, a position that coincided with Arthur Balfour's tenure as Member of Parliament for the constituency and his time as Prime Minister.

Beyond his activism and political engagements, Dreyfus was a successful entrepreneur and intellectual. In 1876, he founded the Clayton Aniline Company, showcasing his business acumen. His intellectual pursuits were recognized with his election to the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society on 8 January 1885. This membership highlights his contributions to and interest in the literary and philosophical fields, demonstrating the breadth of his interests and expertise.
