Joshua Caslari
Joshua Caslari was a Jewish liturgical poet active in Avignon around 1540. His literary contributions include four elegies, which were incorporated into the manuscript Machzor of Avignon. Notably, his signature appears at the end of the last elegy, providing a rare personal touch to his work. As a poet, Caslari's writings offer valuable insights into the literary and cultural landscape of the Jewish community in Avignon during the 16th century.
Caslari's life and activities are also documented through historical records. It is likely that he is the same individual as Jozué du Cayslar, who was elected to the council of the Jewish community of Avignon, as mentioned in a document dated June 15, 1558. This document also names Ferussol Pampelona as a fellow member-elect, highlighting Caslari's involvement in the community's leadership. Through his poetry and community engagement, Joshua Caslari left a lasting impact on the cultural and literary heritage of Avignon's Jewish community.
