Rudolf Sonneborn

American businessman (1898–1986)

Rudolf Sonneborn was a notable American businessman, born in 1898, who made significant contributions to both the industrial and activist spheres. As a prominent figure in the oil industry, he held key positions, including leadership roles in major companies. His professional endeavors took him to various sectors, ultimately leading to his involvement in the establishment and growth of a major oil company in Israel.

Sonneborn's commitment to activism, particularly in the American Zionist Movement, was a hallmark of his career. He was an instrumental fundraiser for the future state of Israel, dedicating considerable time and effort to this cause during the 1940s and 1950s. His presidency of The State of Israel Bond Drive further underscored his dedication to the movement. In 1957, he acquired Socony Mobil's Israel operations, which he subsequently renamed Sonol Israel Ltd., transforming it into one of Israel's leading oil companies. Sonneborn passed away in 1986, leaving behind a legacy of business acumen and philanthropic endeavors.
