Joseph Pardo (hazzan)
English hazzan
Joseph Pardo was a prominent English hazzan, originating from a rabbinical family. His father, David Pardo, served as a rabbi in Amsterdam, where Joseph is believed to have spent his early years before relocating to London. As a hazzan, Joseph Pardo was involved in the musical aspects of Jewish worship, although the specifics of his career in this field are not well-documented.
Pardo is notable for authoring "Shulhan Tahor," a compendium that condensed the first two parts of Joseph Caro's influential "Shulhan 'Aruk." The work was edited by his son, David, and first printed in Amsterdam in 1686. It was dedicated to the Jewish community in London, indicating Pardo's connection to this community. "Shulhan Tahor" gained significant attention and was reprinted multiple times in various locations, including Frankfort-on-the-Main and Frankfort-on-the-Oder, with additional notes by notable figures such as Moses Isserles.
